Aht and Stocke - Radiant Historia

--

So when I first picked up this game I was like, "Hmm, they've got this really unique concept, why'd they go with such a stereotyped hero? I mean, a stoic spy in red with a sword, never seen THAT one before." Yeah, no, I'm an idiot, Stocke is adorable. He's at least half of what makes the game awesome.

Oh, and Aht is cute too. But that's kind of obvious.

*looks up Aht on dA* *sees this adorable picture* Yes.... yes.... *sees your avatar* Yes... I like you, I like you a lot. B| Near the end of this game at the moment, and I've loved it. Very good, Atlus never disappoints it seems. I've not played that many of their games, but all have been top notch <3

Haha, thanks! It is a great game, totally underrated. I haven't played that many Atlus games, either, but you're right on about them! :D At least they've been getting more attention outside Japan lately.

Indeed so. I hope to have more news about when Persona 5 will come out, but I guess knowing it's on the way is enough for now <3

Thank you! :heart: RH is such an interesting game. I can't really point to any one thing that makes it unique, but somehow it still comes off that way.

Hmm, personally, I feel that it has a unique way of utilizing the element of time travel. Most games that do that will have things like alternate endings or side quests and optional plot points that completely alter the flow of the game. Here, however, time travel is the means by which the plot progresses. It's like, the whole basis of the story is trying to correct past mistakes by going back and doing things over again.
And of course, the lovable characters only add to all that. :D

Related to that, I really like how Radiant Historia's version of time travel uses the event progression you see in basically every game with a story. How many times have you savescummed, fishing for a specific outcome, or gotten frustrated trying to trigger an event flag? Here, those are game mechanics! :D It's a great twist that really works with the medium. I think it's the fact that it's not completely unique, but rather a unique take on a common structure, that I really like about it. Does that make sense?

I feel similarly about the plot and characters. There are a lot of familiar things -- magitech and magic swords and fantasy racism and mercenaries and on and on -- but there's something about all of it that sets it apart.

Awwwww, how cute. I especially love Stocke's expression.

Sorry to be off-topic, I got RH this Christmas and have been playing it a lot for the past few days. It's really good, but the battle system is a bit hard to get used to though.

Sorry it took me so long to reply to your comment, but thank you! I love how Stocke sometimes just doesn't reply when people talk to him. I think "..." is probably his most-used quote.

That is perfectly on-topic. :D I really like RH (which I'm sure is totally obvious). Its battle system is pretty odd -- kind of a hybrid of a regular turn-based RPG system and a grid-based strategy game. It seems a lot more complicated than it really is, I think. Have you played it more since you left this comment? What do you think now?

Sorry it took me a long time o reply to you. Got school stuff.

Anyways, I'm currently almost at the end of the game. However, it's a bit too easy unfortunately. The story was very good throughout the game though.

I was just about to apologize for the same thing! :D

Yeah, that's pretty much how I felt about it, too. I like the battle system on a conceptual level, but I think it would stand out a lot more if the game were harder and required more strategy.

Bring tissues. Just a fair warning, if you have a soul you might need them. ;_;

It's a DS game by Atlus. Not terribly difficult, but its time-travel mechanics are pretty interesting.

I'll be getting some tissues then. ;~;

TIME-TRAVEL! and it's on the DS! O8 Now I must get it! *-*

Actually, for me the first game to have a plot that ended up making me cry in the end was Super Paper Mario of all things, and for a Mario RPG it is surprisingly has a very emotional story. o-o

Sometimes it's pretty surprising what ends up being tear-worthy. I cried for like 20 minutes the first time I finished Mother 3. ;_; Now I need to play Super Paper Mario just to see.

Now you remind me of the one thing I hate about Nintendo. The fact that Nintendo is so afraid that they won't sell well is the reason why we have seen so few JRPGs from Nintendo other than the Mario RPGs and Golden Sun. Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower are all highly praised JRPGs that are being released in Europe and Australia , but not in the U.S. All I can say is CURSE YOU REGGIE! I'm afraid the Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower are all going to suffer the same fate as Mother 3. WHYYYYYYYYYY!!!

Ugh, I know. Maybe JRPGs would be more popular here if more of the good ones were available in English! It's a vicious cycle. And it's not like you can just play them in Japanese even if you have the patience to learn Japanese or the diligence to stumble through it anyway because of region coding. :\

:iconfan-of-zeropuntuatio:
Well for the handhelds like the DS and PSP there were quite a few JRPGs made for them. The 360 and PS3 also got a lot of JRPGs, but the Wii got the least as far as I know, but it could of had a lot in Japan, considering it is sooo popular there. I mean the Wii is getting Dragon Quest 10, and the Dragon Quest games are like the Japanese equivalent to Call of Duty, in terms of Popularity.

I know! It's so cute and so sad.

There are several really emotional scenes in this game, but the one that broke my heart the worst was probably the very end of the alternate history. "Why didn't any of you stop him?!"

Aha... I just got it today, but I've been playing the rom for a while. It IS awesome. As expected of Atlus of course.

Aht, you adorable small child, I would hug you if you were real TT_TT and hit however was foolish enough to give a (9?) year old knives.

It is great. I just wish it had difficulty settings, since it's sort of easy, especially for Atlus.

Aht is probably the cutest thing ever to grace my DS screen. I love how when the party meets up with a group of two adults and a little girl, it's the little girl who turns out to be a useable character in battle. :D She doesn't really need her knives anyway. Her trap spells own everything. Except giant spiders.

Haha! How true. Yes, it dies need difficulty settings... it would make it much more challenging, though I'm already irritated with battles because of the number of enemies they throw in. CURSE YOU :shakefish:

Cross Star is the best. And I worship her for it XD

Thank you! I think that Stocke's design is a nice balance between complicated and interesting, so he's pretty fun to draw.

Everyone I've talked to about this game has really liked it. It reminds me of a lot of other more old-school RPGs. I'd say it's sort of easy as Atlus games go, but not so easy that it isn't fun.
